Domenico Mazzocchi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Domenico Mazzocchi (* 8. November 1592 in Civita Castellana , † 21st January 1665 in Rome ) was an Italian composer of the Baroque .

Mazzocchi may have been a student of Giovanni Battista Nanino . From 1640 he was in the service of Cardinal Ippolito Aldobrandini , a great-nephew of Pope Clement VIII of the same name in Rome. Thanks to his patronage, Mazzocchi lived in great luxury. His contribution to the development of an independent Roman opera is significant . The prints of his works are among the first to use dynamic terms such as crescendo , diminuendo , or messa di voce .

His brother Virgilio Mazzocchi (1597–1646) was a musician and composer in the Vatican.
