Domenico Morosini (* 1768 in Venice , † April 22, 1842 in Venice) was appointed mayor ( Podestà ) of Venice, Austria at the time , from November 1827 to March 1834 . Giuseppe Boldù followed him in office.

Life

In 1797 Napoleon occupied Venice, which fell to Austria from 1798 to the end of 1805, and then returned to France until 1815. Finally it came back to Austria with the Congress of Vienna until 1866.

Morosini, who came from one of the most important noble families in Venice, was endowed with a very good memory and a gift for mathematics. He translated Ovid , wrote two tragedies ( Medea and Giulio Sabino , 1806). He married Marietta Da Rio from Padua in 1816 , with whom he had four children. But she died at the age of 32.

Domenico Morosini, who at a young age had written a sonnet that was published through the indiscretion of a friend, suffered only a light sentence. Emperor Franz I of Austria ignored the work and appointed him to the Podestà of Venice on October 27, 1827. On March 21, 1831 he confirmed him for a further three years in this office after he had requested the conversion of Venice into a free port at the imperial court . This request was granted. A few months later he made Morosini chamberlain.

As Podestà, Morosini had a plan drawn up to restore the decaying city. Roads and bridges were repaired and the canals cleaned under the direction of engineer Antonio Boni .

After his death, Pietro Zorzi wrote an eulogy in Morosini, entitled Rimembranze .
