The Dominic's Abbey (also: Dominican Friary , Irish Mainistir Dhoiminiceach Chaisil ) is a former monastery in Ireland .

history

Dominic's Abbey is located southwest of the famous Rock of Cashel , the Irish ecclesiastical center in the High Middle Ages, in the middle of the city of Cashel (now County Tipperary ). The monastery was founded in 1243 by Archbishop David McKelly and the monastery church was dedicated to St. Dominik consecrated.

Archbishop McKelly brought Dominican friars from their friary in Cork into his new foundation . The Irish Dominican Order held its general assemblies here in 1289 and 1307 .

The monastery church was extended by a south aisle around 1270. In 1480 a thorough renovation was carried out by Archbishop John Cantwell after a devastating fire. The crossing tower was probably added at this time.

The ruins of the monastery are now permanently closed, but viewing is possible. The keys to the gate are available on loan from a neighboring house.
