Dominicus Gundisalvi
Dominicus Gundisalvi , Latinized Dominicus Gundissalinus (Spanish: Domínico Gundisalvo or Domingo Gundisalvo; also Gundisalvus, Domingo Gonzales, Gundisalvi of Toledo; * around 1110; † after 1181), was archdeacon of Cuéllar (in Segoveste ) and is considered to be relevant with Gerhard von Crem Representative of the translation school of Toledo , in which numerous works by Arabic-Hebrew thinkers were translated into Latin in the 12th century under the patronage of Archbishop Raimund von Toledo . From around 1140 he translated almost twenty works from Arabic together with Johannes Hispalensis (and the possibly identical Abraham ibn Daud ).
Among the numerous translators of Aristotelian works of the 12th and 13th centuries, Gundisalvi stands out due to the fact that he already incorporated the processing of these texts into independent considerations. Against the background of the systematics of the works of Aristotle, Gundisalvi proposed in his work De divisione philosophiae (approx. 1145) the distinction between theology as divina scientia and philosophy as humana scientia . The latter is divided into propaedeutic sciences ( grammar , poetics , rhetoric ), logic and philosophy in the narrower sense. This in turn is divided into a theoretical and a practical philosophy . The consequence of this reorganization was that the septem artes liberales , which until then had shaped the content of medieval studies, lost their independence.
