Domnius von Split (* in the 3rd century in Syria , today Turkey ; † in 304 in Dalmatia , today Croatia ) was a bishop and martyr . He is a saint of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Saint Domnius of Split ( Latin Domnius ; Croat. Sveti Duje ) was born in Antioch in the 3rd century , belonging to Syria at that time and now in Turkey . In the 3rd century he was bishop of the Diocese of Salona , today the Archdiocese of Split-Makarska . He and seven other Christians were handed over to the executioner at Salona during the last persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire under Emperor Diocletian and beheaded. The Christians of the city of Salona secretly buried his body. A basilica was built over his grave . Today his relics are in the Cathedral of St. Duje von Split, the actual mausoleum of the Roman emperor Diocletian. At the same time he is the patron saint of the Croatian coastal city of Split .

His feast day is celebrated on May 7th.
