Don Ellis Tjapanangka

Don Ellis Tjapanangka (* 1925 in Australia , † 1976 in Alice Springs , Northern Territory ) was an Aboriginal artist.

Don Ellis Tjapanangka was the son of Old Tom Onion Tjapangati, the keeper of the honey pot ants - dream time . In 1971, Don Ellis was one of seven Aborigines involved in creating the honey pot ant mural in Papunya . Among the Aboriginal people who created this mural, he and Kaapa Tjampitjinpa were the only ones who had been painters before. In 1972 Ellis went to Yuendumu , an Aboriginal settlement in the Western Desert . In 1976 he was murdered by a mentally ill on the Todd River near Alice Springs.

It is believed that after 1971, until his violent death, he painted only ten pictures.
