Yuendumu is a town in the Northern Territory in Australia . The city is about 300 kilometers northwest of Alice Springs on the Tanami Track . The population is around 700 and consists mainly of Warlpiri - Aborigines with one of the most important Aboriginal artists' organizations in Australia.
It is home to a community of around 600 artists, the Warlukurlangu . The city was founded in 1946 by the Native Affairs Branch . In 1947 a Baptist mission was established. In 1955, many local Warlpiri groups were settled in the city.
Numerous Aboriginal artists who have organized themselves in the Warlukurlangu live in and around this place. This artist organization has its origins in painting the doors of the Yuendumu school and was painted by Paddy Japaljarri Stewart and Paddy Japaljarri Sims , who are among the most famous artists in the community.
In the early 1980s, the Yuendumu Warlpiri first painted ceremonial motifs on canvas and in 1985 the Warlukurlangu Artists - Aboriginal Association was founded in Yuendumu.
