Donald Curry, Baron Curry of Kirkharle

Donald Thomas Younger Curry, Baron Curry of Kirkharle , Kt , CBE (born April 4, 1944 ) is a British farmer , businessman and life peer .

life and career

Curry graduated from Kirkley Hall College . He later worked as a farmer in Northumberland .

In 1990 he founded the charity organization At Home in the Community , which supports people with learning disabilities. Since then, he has been Chairman ( Chair ).

From 2000 to 2007 he was Commissioner of the Crown Estate . He was chairman of the Commission on the Future of Farming and Food from 2001 to 2002. Until 2009 he was Chair of the Strategy for Sustainable Farming and Food .

He has been Chairman of NFU Mutual since 2003 and a member of the Board of Directors since 1997. He has also been the Non-Executive Chair of the Better Regulation Executive for the government since 2009 .

In 2012 Curry was named the new chairman of the Royal Veterinary College .

He is chairman of the Leckford Estate and was previously chairman of the delivery group of the government's Sustainable Farming & Food Strategy . Curry is also a member of the Council of the Royal Agricultural Society .

Membership in the House of Lords

On September 5, 2011, the House of Lords Appointments Commission announced that it had recommended Curry's appointment as a Life Peer . This took place on October 13, 2011 as Baron Curry of Kirkharle , of Kirkharle in the County of Northumberland. Its official introduction to the House of Lords took place on October 24, 2011 with the assistance of Charles Henry Plumb, Baron Plumb and Hazel Byford, Baroness Byford . He gave his inaugural address on February 6, 2012.

He sits in the upper house as a crossbencher . In July 2012, he supported the Labor Party , which called for an amendment on the occasion of the Groceries Code Adjudicator Bill .

Curry's presence is roughly in the middle.

Honors

Curry was named Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1997 for his services to agriculture . In 2001 he was beaten to a Knight Bachelor degree .

The Cranfield University honored him in 2004 with an honorary Bachelor of Science (BSc Hon), the following year he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Gloucestershire honored. In 2008 he received an Honorary Doctor of Laws (Hon DCL) from Newcastle University .
