The Dongjiang Dam is an arch dam on the Li Shui in the urban district of Zixing , 14 km southwest of the city center, in the Hunan Province , China. The dam was built between 1978 and 1992 and supplies a 500 MW hydropower plant ( Chinese  东江水 电厂 , Pinyin Dongjiang Shuidianchang ). The dam is also used for flood protection, making it navigable and supplying water. The first generator went into operation in 1987. 5.2 million people had to be resettled for the reservoir ( 东 江湖 , Dongjiang Hu ).

Building

The Dongjiang dam is a 157 m high and 438 m long arch dam with a variable radius. The wall is 7 m wide at its building crown, 35 m at its base and has an arc radius of 302.3 m. It has a catchment area of 4719 km² and can hold a water volume of 9565 million m³. The hydroelectric power station is at the foot of the wall and has four 125 MW Francis turbines with generators. The damming provides a hydraulic head of 118.5 m. There is also a boat lift at the dam.
