Průrva Ploučnice

Průrva Ploučnice (German Polzbruchbruch , also Höllenschlund, Donner- or Teufelsloch ) is an artificially created underground river of the Ploučnice ( Polzen ) near Noviny pod Ralskem ( Neuland ) in Northern Bohemia ( Czech Republic ).

description

The Ploučnice ( Polzen ) flows over 150 meters through an artificial canal that runs partly underground in a tunnel with a few light shafts. The system was built in the 16th century as the outlet of a reservoir. In the event of flooding, the canal limits the flow rate of the water and backwater occurs. However, only forest and meadow areas are flooded; built-up areas are not affected. The Polzendruchbruch thus serves as a natural flood protection.

Similar rock channels can also be found at Doksy ( Hirschberg ), Zahrádky ( Neugarten ) and Holany ( Caves ). The Münchner Schlucken (Mnichovská průrva), the Heidemühler Schlucken ( Břehyňská průrva ) and the Hirnsener Schlucken (Novozámecká průrva) are known there.

On December 19, 1997, the Polzbruchbruch was placed under state protection as a cultural monument .
