Doon Castle

Doon Castle ( Irish Caisleán to Dúin ) is the ruins of a hilltop castle on a hill about 6.5 kilometers east of Westport in Ireland's County Mayo . Little remains of this castle.

history

In 1133, Cormac Mac Cárthaigh and Conchobar Ua attacked Briain Connacht and sacked much of the region, destroying Dún Mughdhord Castle and the town of Dunmore .

The Norman Doon Castle appears to have been built on the site of the old castle. Today the castle has almost disappeared. It was in Dooncastle townland . According to local sources, the old building blocks of Lord Sligo Castle were used to build Westport House .

description

The castle ruins are located on a 50 meter high hill and from there you have an excellent view to the east and southeast, towards Islandeady and Aille , where the other castles of McPhilpin were. The ruins on the hill have the shape of an ellipse 36–54 meters long and 18 meters wide. The castle had a rectangular floor plan about 12 meters by 9 meters. The space between the main castle and the outer defensive structures was not large.

According to Knox belonged to MacPhilpins the castles Ayle Castle, Aghle Castle and Doon Castle in Baronat Burrishoole and castles Bellabourke Castle and New Castle in the barony Carra .
