Kinnefad Castle

Kinnefad Castle ( Irish Caisleán Chionn Átha Fada , German: "Castle at the head of the long ford") is the ruin of a low castle on the outskirts of Edenderry in County Offaly, Ireland . The Berminghams had the fortress built in the 14th century. Today the east wall of the building is missing, so you can look inside, where you can see some stone slabs of a spiral staircase .

description

The doctor and author William Wilde described the building as follows:

“A large, square-footed block of buildings measuring 47 feet by 39 feet [14.1 meters by 11.7 meters] with the outside walls pretty much perfect. Because of its few and narrow windows, as well as its overall construction, it seems to date from an earlier period than the modern parts of Carbury Castle ; At that time, strength influenced the builders more than attention to comfort. Kinnefad Castle stands on a shoal of the river, and it is said that this was often a place of wild conflict. Lord Downshire's agent in Edenderry has many very old weapons in his possession that have been unearthed near this place, stone tools, sword blades, spearheads, etc. ”
