Doon Laurence Gibbs (born February 5, 1954 in Urbana (Illinois) ) is an American physicist and currently director of the Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island .

Doon Gibbs grew up in Salt Lake City and studied physics and mathematics at the University of Utah . He received his bachelor's degree in 1977 and his master's degree in 1979. He received his PhD from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1982 , before joining the Brookhaven National Laboratory as an Assistant Physicist a year later. From 1984 he was an associate physicist of the laboratory. In 2000 he became Senior Scientist and two years later Associate Laboratory Director for Basic Energy Sciences. In 2007 he became vice director of science and technology. As the successor to Samuel Aronson , he was appointed interim director in December 2012 and finally laboratory director in early 2013.

Gibbs is known for his contributions to experimental solid-state physics with synchrotron- based X-ray scattering . He is one of the discoverers of resonant magnetic X-ray scattering , which he used for experiments on the magnetic structures of rare earths and rare earth compounds. In addition, he made significant contributions to the theoretical description of this phenomenon. He also investigated orbital and charge order in manganites using non-magnetic resonant X-ray scattering, as well as the surfaces of precious metals using X-ray scattering under grazing incidence.

Gibbs is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science . In addition, he received the Arthur H. Compton Award from the Advanced Photon Source in 2003 for "groundbreaking theoretical and experimental work in the field of resonant magnetic X-ray scattering, which has led to many important applications in solid-state physics."
