Doorboard

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Doorboard (possibly Scheinanglizismus , German literally door board ) is a term from the field of car hi-fi and car tuning , here specifically of the interior tuning , and refers to a speaker mounting plate , which is usually in the motor vehicle doors installed or on the door panel is mounted. The doorboard serves as the basis for the sound system ( tweeter and woofer , subwoofer, etc.) and should ideally be integrated into the existing design of the vehicle interior by using suitable materials .

Pre-assembled doorboards

Many manufacturers have pre-assembled doorboards including suitable sound systems for different car models in their range. Since the installation of such pre-assembled doorboards is relatively demanding, specialist companies from the car hi-fi industry offer installation as a service.

Self-made

The self-construction of doorboards is very popular within the tuner scene. In order to achieve an optically as well as acoustically appealing result, good to very good manual skills are required from the self - builder , as well as knowledge in the areas of acoustics , car electronics and electrics , saddlery , model making , etc.

Risks and Dangers

  • In addition to safety-related hazards such as cable fires , short circuits , damage to the on-board electronics or impairment of the door lock or the window regulator , which arise from improper installation and operation and can lead to the expiry of the operating license and the loss of insurance cover , the subsequent installation of a doorboard often has the irreversible damage to the standard door trim or even the door panel of the vehicle. In the case of leased vehicles - which by definition are not the property of the lessee - the leasing companies generally prohibit such irreversible changes to the vehicle, so that when the leased vehicle is returned, additional costs due to the dismantling of the doorboard can be expected.
  • If there are malfunctions in the sound system or faults in the on-board electronics are caused by the subsequently installed doorboard, the fault diagnosis and rectification by the specialist workshops of the respective automobile manufacturer is made even more difficult.
  • When selling a vehicle with subsequently mounted doorboards, the costs for the conversion can usually not be recovered; this generally applies to all subsequent, non-standard tuning measures. Depending on the scope and quality of the subsequent modifications, the resale value of the vehicle can even decrease to a greater or lesser extent.

origin of the name

  • The term doorboard does not exist as a separate word in English.
  • In English, the term door board is occasionally used for a sign that is attached to the house or apartment door with sayings , the name of the apartment owner or just the house number.
  • A door cladding for a house or apartment door can also be called a door board in English .
  • The term doorboard may have developed in the German-speaking tuner scene as a pseudo - Anglicism , it could be a new word based on the literal translation of the German word door cardboard ( coll. For door lining ) into English.
