Doppler effect (band)
The band Dopplereffekt first appeared in Detroit , Michigan in the mid-1990s and are an important and influential exponent of the electro scene.
History and style
The music project was initiated by Gerald Donald , but the identity of the musicians was kept secret with pseudonyms such as Rudolf Klorzeiger . As further members were u. a. William Scott , Kim Karli and, later, To Nhan Le Thi in their place . In connection with the rare public appearance, this serves the targeted mystification of the group. The name of the band refers to the physical phenomenon of the Doppler effect .
The first Doppler effect publications were made in small editions at Dataphysix Engineering , with the EP Infophysix in particular with pieces such as "Voice Activated" , "Pornovision" and "Pornoactress" becoming known. International Deejay Gigolos licensed the tracks that had been released up to then in 1999 and released them as a double LP under the name " Gesamtkunstwerk " , which gave the group an enormous boost in popularity.
The sound of these influential and style-forming publications is characterized by minimalism , synthesizer sounds in the style of Kraftwerk , the integration of sounds in the style of 8-bit aesthetics (computer games, etc.), the - often humorous - use of vocoder voices, but also Vocals without alienating effects. In terms of content, topics such as technology and science , v. a. Physics and biotechnology , or biopolitics and racism ( “We had to sterilize the population” , “Superior Race” ) as well as new media and cybersex ( “Plastiphilia” ) in the foreground. Criticism of the political side of new technologies is expressed in the title of the first EP from 1995, Fascist State .
The album released in 2003 "Linear Accelerator" ( linear accelerator ) is very atypical compared to the previous work and experimental; Instead of danceable rhythms, there are dark sound surface compositions . This style, which is far less catchy than the first releases, was retained on the last album "Calabi Yau Space" (named after the physical phenomenon of the Calabi Yau space ).
Gerald Donald's side projects include a. The cycle , Japanese Telecom and Arpanet , named after the forerunner of the Internet (see Arpanet ). Donald's first release was an EP under the pseudonym Glass Domain on Pornophonic Sound Disc in 1991. Under the name Heinrich Mueller , Donald made some remixes by other electro artists, including DJ Hell . He also used this name for the credits of some publications, as well as for the participation in the groups Black Replica , Zerkalo and Zwischenwelt , which mainly present themselves on the Internet on Youtube and Myspace . Donald's most important former project besides the Dopplereffekt was, together with James Marcel Stinson , who died in 2002 , the more techno- heavy project Drexciya .
