Doreen Norton

Doreen Norton OBE (born May 1, 1922 in Dartford , † December 30, 2007 in Worthing ) was a British nurse . Norton developed the Norton Scale, named after her, in the 1950s to assess the risk of pressure ulcers.

Life

Norton dropped out of school at the age of 14 and worked for her father's company before training to be a nurse. After completing his training in 1946, Norton initially specialized in tuberculosis patients, but then turned to geriatrics . She attended the Royal College of Nursing in London and completed a ward management course. Norton did a lot of research into the causes and prevention of bedsores in geriatric patients. In 1962, her book An Investigation of Geriatric Nursing Problems in Hospital appeared , in which Norton published her point scale for assessing the risk of pressure ulcers. In Germany, this developed into the most popular tool for assessing the risk of pressure ulcers.

Norton received a research fellowship in the Department of Nursing at the University of Edinburgh , where he obtained a Master of Science degree in 1969 . Norton then worked at the Scottish Home and Health Department .

From 1975 to 1978 Norton was the first chairperson of the newly formed Society of Geriatric Nursing .

In 1982 Norton retired from nursing and took on a visiting professorship in the Chair of Geronotological Nursing at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland , Ohio .

Awards

In 1976 Norton was made a Fellow of the Royal College of Nursing, and a year later, in 1977, she was awarded the Order of the British Empire . In 2003 she made the University of the South Bank in London an honorary member, and Lewisham University Hospital named a geriatric ward after Norton, the Doreen Norton ward .
