Dorfen beer war

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Dorfen Beer War (in short: Beer War ) is the name given to the riots and arson in Dorfen associated with the beer price increase in 1910 .

procedure

After the passage of the Malt Surcharge Act, which provided for increased taxation of beer , brewers were forced to increase the price of a liter of beer from 24 to 26  pfennigs . Anger quickly spread among the population at this price increase, which led to the breweries temporarily selling the beer for the original price of 24 pfennigs per liter. At a conference in Mühldorf am Inn it was decided to establish the new award in the Kingdom of Bavaria from now on . The citizens of Dorfen reacted with a beer boycott, which led to the Bachmayer brewery having to throw away some of its goods. In addition, threatening letters were increasingly received by breweries and inns in Dorfen . The increased price of beer was maintained despite the threat of losses.

Fires in villages

On June 5, 1910, the volunteer fire brigade in Dorfen and numerous other fire brigades in the area were alerted due to fires in Dorfen. The Waitl brewery Soafa and Jakobmayer were on fire. Despite great efforts on the part of the fire brigades, it could not be prevented from spreading to neighboring buildings, so that seven buildings were destroyed. During and after the extinguishing work, the firefighters were given free beer by residents and farmers, which among other things led to riots and breaches of the peace during the night . Only after the Bachmayer brewery declared that it would reduce the price of beer to 24 pfennigs per liter again, the gendarmerie was able to calm the situation in Dorfen again.

Legal consequences

In the days that followed the beer war , 25 people were arrested and taken to the Kgl. Bayr. Munich Regional Court . On December 14, the court sentenced three defendants to prison terms of 15, 9 and 4 months respectively. The remaining 21 defendants received prison terms totaling 72 months.

Cultural reception

The Dorfen Beer War was repeated as a festival in 1995, 1999 and 2010. For this purpose, a play was developed, which was performed in July in the old town of Dorfen with the help of sponsors. For this festival, the citizens of Dorfen slip into the roles of the residents of that time.

A "Geisbach beer riot", obviously based on the Dorfen beer war, is announced in front of the Kgl. Bayr. District court negotiates (episode 2).
