St. Nikolaus (Böllberg)
The village church of St. Nikolaus in the Böllberg district in Halle (Saale) is the oldest church in Halle and part of the Romanesque Road .
history
The church was built by Dutch colonists at the end of the 12th century. The first indirect documentary mention of the church comes from the year 1291, when a chaplain for Böllberg, at that time Bellberch uf der Sale , was mentioned. In 1298 it is mentioned that the church is dedicated to Saint Nicholas .
In 1307 the church became an independent parish church, previously it was a branch of the Georgenkloster Glaucha .
Around 1500 the wooden ceiling of the church was decorated with stencil painting .
After the Reformation , St. Nikolaus became a branch church in Wörmlitz . At the beginning and in the middle of the 17th century an extensive restoration was carried out in which the pulpit, the altar structure, the crucifix and the Luther picture were renewed or reinserted.
It is not known when the bell was used. They were sold in 1788 and the proceeds were used for church repairs.
In 1825 the damaged wooden tower in which the bell was located was removed and the roof closed again at the point.
In 1844 the church had been unused for more than 20 years, and the parishioners visited the church in Wörmlitz . The church was in bad shape; Ferdinand von Quast's efforts to preserve the church prevented it from being demolished. Quast particularly praised the ceiling painting; City architect August Stapel later restored the ceiling in the eastern part, the southern part was colored white. In 1850 the windows on the west side were enlarged; two of the windows were probably enlarged before 1800. In 1877 the church bought an organ from Friedrich Wäldner , and had already started negotiations in 1854. An application from the parish in 1898 to enlarge the remaining windows was rejected. In 1928 an electric church heater was installed. During the restoration of the church in 1930/31, in addition to the new covering of the roof and the purchase of a harmonium, the whitewashed ceiling in the western part of the church was restored. In 1950 Böllberg was incorporated into Halle. From 1972 to 1975 the Böllberger Weg was expanded into a multi-lane road. In 1975 the church's cemetery was greatly reduced in size. In 1982/83 a bowl-shaped bell tower was built south of the church, in which the bell from 1921 was inserted.
In autumn 2005 the building was extensively renovated. The apse was re-covered, the roof structure completely renewed and the ceiling painting renovated.
The parish of Wörmlitz-Böllberg belongs to the Halle-Saalkreis parish of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .
Furnishing
The oldest piece of equipment in the church is the Romanesque font. It is completely goblet-shaped and unadorned.
A special feature of the church is the stencil painting on the wooden ceiling that was created around 1500 or in the second half of the 15th century. Even Karl Friedrich Schinkel found this already interesting and could be making a copy of it. The colors used are red, green, white and black and the painting is very detailed and shows, for example, bows and pomegranate motifs.
The pulpit of the church dates from the late Renaissance and was painted by Fritz Leweke in 1930/31 . The fields of the pulpit and the stair parapet are decorated with pictures of the apostles Jacobus, Bartholomäus, Andreas, Peter and Paulus.
Above the patronage stalls on the south side of the church there is a picture of Luther from 1657. It commemorates the 140th recurrence of the posting of the theses .
The crucifix is now above the entrance portal and shows Jesus half natural size. It was probably created around 1700, even if the inscription INRI. To 1600 reads.
The organ dates from 1979 and was built by Georg Kühne , Merseburg.
Building description
The church is one of sandstone erected hall building with a semicircular apse in the east. It does not have a tower, a bell tower stands separately a little south of the church building. The west side of the church roof is adorned by a weather vane on which the year 1184 can be read.
Originally the church had three small arched windows on both the south and north sides. The windows on the south side were enlarged until 1850 and a fourth window was installed in the south side.
The entrance to the church is in the south. To the west of the entrance is the tomb of the Hildebrand family , which was built in 1875. The family had owned the Böllberger Mühle since 1858 and was therefore also the patron of the church until 1945.
To the east of the entrance is a sandstone plaque commemorating those who fell in the First World War. The church is surrounded by the Böllberg Protestant cemetery .
