The Evangelical village church is located in the Versmold district of Bockhorst in the North Rhine-Westphalian district of Gütersloh in Germany .
It was originally built as a single-nave Romanesque chapel in the 12th or 13th century. In the 17th century the chapel was replaced by a parish church, which ends in the east with a semicircular apse and a west tower. From 1893 to 1894 the church was extended in the shape of a cross with two side aisles, where a triumphal cross was discovered in the attic. The historical color of the interior was restored in 1978/79. The church and parish belong to the Halle parish in the Evangelical Church of Westphalia and cover 18.51 km². The community has 1,593 believers (as of 2009).
Furnishing
The larger-than-life triumphal cross , created around 1150, was discovered in 1893 during renovation work on the church loft and has been in the LWL State Museum for Art and Cultural History in Münster since 1894 . In this representation, Christ does not wear a crown of thorns, but the "crown of heaven" as a sign of triumph. The original measures a height of 3.50 m and a width of 2.20 m and is considered to be the most completely preserved grand cross from its time. In 1967 the cross was exhibited at the World's Fair in Montreal , Canada. A scaled-down replica now adorns the altar. The altarpiece Christ blessing the chalice by the Düsseldorf Nazarene Raphael Schall , painted in 1840, had been positioned there since 1847 ; today it hangs on the wall of the main nave.
