The Protestant village church Döben is an originally Romanesque church with a later built choir tower in the Döben district of Grimma in the Leipzig district in Saxony . It belongs to the parish Döben-Höfgen in the church district Grimma of the Evangelical Lutheran regional church of Saxony .

History and architecture

The Döben church, which characterizes the locality, was created through multiple reconstructions of an originally Romanesque church, which in its current form is mainly determined by the baroque reconstruction in 1696/96. The oldest part is the Romanesque choir, which was covered with a gable roof and received the tower room above in the 13th century. The choir polygon is identified with a chapel that was built in 1507 by the von Maltitz brothers . Around 1600 a two-story extension was built on the north side of the choir. The nave of the church was renewed in the 17th century and the sacristy in 1813. Restorations took place in 1910/11, 1959 and 1963. The wooden ceiling inside was restored in 1983 and 1992/93.

The church is a partly plastered quarry stone building with a choir tower, which is closed with an eight-sided bell storey and a baroque dome . The choir polygon shows richly designed tracery windows and buttresses, the hall simple pointed arch windows. A sundial is attached to the south side.

The interior is characterized by the baroque furnishings from the 16th and 17th centuries. The hall is closed off by a painted wooden ceiling from 1696, which shows the Adoration by the Shepherds, the Crucifixion, Resurrection and Ascension of Christ as well as the Last Judgment in four round pictures and in a central hexagon .

The hall is surrounded on three sides by two-story galleries; the western gallery shows a curved parapet on winding wooden columns. The choir is spanned by a groin vault, the choir polygon with a cell vault. On the north side of the choir there is a well-designed two-storey mansion box with carvings and groin vaults inside. The parapet shows painted representations in round fields with the Lord's Supper, the washing of the feet , Christ in Gethsemane , the appearance of Christ to the guardians of the grave and the capture .

Furnishing

The splendid altar from 1591 was probably designed by Franz Ditterich the Elder and shows two predellas ; the lower, older one with an Adoration of the Shepherds and the upper one from 1591 with Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane and the Last Supper. In the main field, between double columns, there is a relief of the Carrying of the Cross and the Entombment of Christ , including the von Schönfeld donor family kneeling under the crucifix as a high relief . The coat of arms and initials of the founder can be found in the cheeks.

The pulpit from the 17th century is carried by a figure of Moses and shows reliefs of the evangelists on the parapet and the apostles painted on the parapet.

The large Romanesque font and the arched sacrament niche in the choir still belong to the Middle Ages . A life-size crucifix was probably created in the 16th century. A tombstone from the first half of the 12th century commemorates the Burgrave of Döben and shows a bearded, bareheaded figure with a sword. A children's tombstone commemorates Dorothea von Schönfeld, who died in 1602.

During the restoration in 1911, the 15th century bells were replaced with three new bronze bells. Two of the three bells were melted down during World War II , and the third was exchanged for three steel bells after the war.

The organ is a work by Schmeisser from 1911.

Peal

The ringing consists of three cast steel bells, the bell cage is made of steel and the bell yokes are made of cast steel. Below is a data overview of the bell:
