history

Kapellendorf has one of the oldest churches in Thuringia.

Epitaphs

There was even a predecessor on the land on which today's church stands. It was a chapel around the year 800 that was first mentioned. Hence the name Kapellendorf. This church was fiefdom of the burgraves of Kirchberg (today near Jena ). In 1235 a Cistercian monastery was founded in the village . Numerous tombs in the church and elsewhere testify to this time. Since the monastery was dissolved, the church became the property of the community again.

1977–1988 the interior of the church was largely reconstructed and redesigned. The arcades to a side aisle, which had been removed earlier, were exposed and glazed. All galleries were removed, as well as a pulpit altar from the 18th century. The pulpit altar became a lectern.
