The Protestant village church Schönbach is located in the Schönbach district of the city of Greiz in the Greiz district in Thuringia .

history

In 1288, the original Schönbach Maternus Chapel was consecrated on the site of today's cemetery by senior chaplain Sebastian Laue from Elsterberg. From this church the basin of the Romanesque baptismal font from the 13th century and the big bell, which Magister Joh. Eberhard had cast in Zwickau in 1662, have been preserved.

In 1430 the church, town and parish were pillaged by the Hussites. The new church was built in the former parish garden from 1739 to 1744 and consecrated on June 21, 1744. The old dilapidated church was demolished. The baroque church building consists of a hall closed on three sides with large arched windows and a two-storey gallery. The drawn-in west tower with a slender, slated octagon with a pointed helmet is 29 m high, including the tower button and weather vane 31 m. The pointed helmet of the tower was created after the original Thuringian hood of the tower was destroyed by lightning in 1882. A crucifixion painting from the first half of the 17th century has been inserted into the classicist pulpit altar. (probably originally part of another altar). The rococo font in the shape of an urn from 1768, which was donated by the Cunsdorf farmer Heydrich, is richly designed. Extensive renovation work on the building was carried out in 1905 and 2014. In 2014, the first construction phase was completed, the sponge infestation in the tower was renovated, the tower was re-covered and the upper part of the tower was re-plastered based on the design from 1905. For the second part of the renovation, the nave, the necessary funds are currently being collected. Among other things, the parish associations (Cossengrün, Cunsdorf, Schönbach) organize an annual “Harvest Festival” benefit event.
