The Dorididae , also called sea lemons , are a family of star snails in the suborder of the nudibranchs . These are mostly larger, exclusively marine, caseless snail species that mainly eat sponges .
features
The Dorididae are up to 20 cm long. They have a flat body with an oval outline. The mostly yellowish to whitish coat is sometimes spotted with black. It can be spread widely. The back is covered with numerous small bumps or warts, the tubercles, sometimes leathery and contains sclerites . The two lamellar antennae on the head, the rhinophores , are usually raised. The same applies to the gills around the anus on the back, which can be retracted in gill sheaths. The snails have a broad radula without central teeth and (unlike the genus Aldisa, which was previously included ) with hook-shaped inner posterior teeth. Jaws are missing.
The Dorididae mainly eat sponges, but also other sessile animals whose meat is rasped off with the radula.
Like other star snails, the Dorididae are hermaphrodites and mate with each other. They lay their eggs in white or yellow egg strings , from which numerous Veliger larvae hatch. They feed on plankton and after a long pelagic phase metamorphose into small star snails .
The Dorididae also include the sea lemon ( Doris pseudoargus ) that occurs in the North Sea and the wart hump ( Doris verrucosa ).
Systematics
According to Bouchet and Rocroi (2005), the Dorididae family is one of four families in the Doridoidea superfamily . The family includes five genera:
- Aphelodoris Bergh , 1879
- Conualevia Collier & Farmer, 1964
- Doris Linnaeus , 1758
- Goslineria Valdés, 2001
- Pharodoris Valdés, 2001
A number of other genera described are synonyms of the genus Doris Linnaeus, 1758, including Archidoris Bergh , 1878. The name Homoiodoris Bergh, 1882 is a dubious name.
