Dorothee Gänshirt

Dorothee Gänshirt (born May 27, 1955 in Cologne ) is a German human geneticist and prenatal doctor .

Career

From 1974 to 1975 she studied chemistry at Rutgers University , New Brunswick , USA, from 1975 to 1977 at Heidelberg University and from 1977 to 1983 at Münster University, biology and medicine. In 1987 she completed her doctorate (Dr. rer. Medic; PhH) in human genetics at the University of Münster . In 1998 she completed her habilitation in reproductive genetics and in 2000 she was appointed professor of reproductive genetics at the University Women's Clinic in Basel. In 2013, she was appointed Professor of Health Communication at the Center for Health Communication and Health Services Research at the Sigmund Freud University in Vienna . In addition to teaching in Vienna, she has lectured at the University of Münster, University of Basel, University of Hamburg, the European School of Medicine, Sestri Levante and the Wolfson Institute of Preventive Medicine, London.

In addition to her university activities, from 1993 to 1997 she was co-founder and CEO of Cell Search Biotech GmbH Münster, a company for the technical and clinical development of an innovative diagnostic method in prenatal diagnostics, funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH). Since 2003 she has been co-founder of Health Care Competence Center GmbH (HC3), Zurich and President and co-founder of the European Health Care Foundation, (EUHCF), Zurich. She is also the developer of several patents in Europe, Japan and the USA for a non-invasive method for prenatal diagnosis from fetal cells from the maternal circulation.

Research priorities

The Institute for Health Communication and Health Services Research at the Sigmund Freud University in Vienna works in cooperation with the European Health Care Foundation (EUHCF) in Zurich on the following priorities:

  • Development of strategies for prevention, compliance and disease management of chronic diseases
  • Evaluation of the potential benefits of medical innovations for patient care
  • Innovative strategies in the field of nutritional medicine

The aim of the Institute for Health Communication and Health Services Research and the European Foundation for Health is to develop evidence-based concepts for improved care for people with chronic diseases. One example of this is the patient fox; it is the first self-management portal for chronic diseases in Europe. Another goal is to build a pan-European network of all interest groups in the health system. In cooperation with the European Foundation for Health, the Institute for Health Communication and Health Services Research is creating a platform that catalyzes and promotes the implementation of evaluated health care concepts in Europe.
