The Dorper caves are five or four closely neighboring caves in the Wuppertal city area, they are jointly designated as natural monuments according to § 22 a LG NRW .

Location and description

The Dorper caves in the 488 m long former railway tunnel , the Dorp tunnel of the Düsseldorf-Derendorf – Dortmund Süd railway line (called "Nordbahntrasse" ), are so far the only known caves in limestone layers of Dorp facies 1 . Four small caves are the Dorper Laughöhle, Dorper Schachthöhle, Dorper Tunnelhöhle I ( cadastral number ; 4708/004 16 m length, 7.5 m height difference), Dorper tunnel cave II ( cadastral number 4708/010; 45 m length, 6 m height difference). In the 2015 survey report, only four caves were mentioned, the entry as a natural monument refers to five caves, and it is possible that for the 2015 report two Laughaves were combined into one.

Nüller Straße is located above the mountains.

The caves serve as winter quarters for water bats and great mouse-ears . Also dwarf bats are frequently observed in warm summer nights on the northern railway line during hunting trip. With the exception of access holes for bats, access to the caves is locked to prevent unauthorized entry.

history

The tunnel was built from 1868 to 1872. The railway line was shut down in 1999. The caves were examined in more detail by the Kluterthöhle Working Group (AKKH) in 2008 before the start of the redesign of the disused railway line in 2009 as a walkway and bike path.
