Dorsal Atlântica was a Brazilian metal band from Rio de Janeiro , which was founded in 1981 under the name NESS and disbanded around 1999.

history

The band was founded in 1981 by Carlos Lopes and his brother Claudio under the name NESS. The band consisted of three members, with the line-up of the drummer changing frequently. Their first demo followed in 1982 and a split album called Ultimatum in 1984 together with Metalmorphose . In 1986 the band released their debut album called Antes do fim, originally planned as a second demo recording . In the same year the band also performed at the Americana Festival. In 1988 the next album followed with Dividir & conquistar . From 1989 three more albums followed. The band received no royalties from Wild Rags Records for Searching for the Light .

The band played concerts all over Brazil, where they played together with Sepultura , among others . In 1996 the band received a tribute album. In addition, the album Straight was released in the same year , followed by the live album Terrorism Alive in 1999 . The album also included the 1984 Ultimatum album as a bonus . In addition, in 2002 all recordings from 1982 to 1985 were released on vinyl with additional live material.

style

The band is described as an important Brazilian band in extreme metal and compared to bands like Venom , Exciter and Hellhammer .

Until the second album, the lyrics were in Portuguese because the band wanted to get their message across to the Brazilian audience, and on later releases in English to get their messages across the world. Originally the band wrote rather simple lyrics about violence, but over time the lyrics became more thoughtful and conceptual. On their concept albums the band dealt with the problems and their background in the country, three of their albums form a " mystical trilogy" consisting of three albums, according to Carlos Lopes , which is his "personal project to discuss and find solutions for the development of mankind", and the story of a crucified black Messiah from the slums on Alea jacta est .
