Coordinates: 41 ° 10 ′  S , 147 ° 31 ′  E The Dorset Municipality is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Tasmania . The area is 3196 km² and has about 6600 inhabitants (2016).

Dorset is located in the northeast corner of the Tasmanian island about 200 kilometers north of the capital Hobart . The area includes 40 hamlets and villages: Alberton, Blumont, Boobyalla, Branxholm, Bridport , Cape Portland, Cladstone, Cuckoo, Derby, Dorset, Forester, Goloonda, Herrick, Jetsonville, Kamona, Legerwood, Lietinna, Lisle, Maurice, Moorina, South Mt Cameron, Musselroe Bay, Nabowla, Pioneer, Ringarooma, Rushy Lagoon, Scottsdale , North Scottsdale, West Scottsdale, Springfield, South Springfield, Talawa, Telita, Tomahawk, Tonganah, Trenah, Tulendeena, Warrentinna, Waterhouse and Winnaleah. The seat of the council is in Scottsdale in the southwest of the LGA, where about 1900 inhabitants live (2016).

The Dorset Council has nine members. The mayor (mayor), his deputy (deputy) and seven councilors are directly elected by the residents of the LGA. Dorset is not divided into districts.
