Douentza is a municipality in the Mopti region in Mali and the administrative seat of the district of the same name . It is located 145 km northeast of Mopti on the RN15 national road between Mopti and Gao .

history

Douentza was the capital of the former Fulani -Königreichs called Haayre . The area was fought over by Tuareg and Fulbe groups from at least the 17th century until the Fulbe and Tukulor became the dominant ethnic group with the expansion of the Massina Empire in the first half of the 19th century .

The French came to Douentza in the last decade of the 19th century and assimilated the prevailing political structures through indirect rule .

Today, the majority of the Fulbe and Tuareg people, descendants of earlier Tuareg slaves, Bambara and other ethnic groups, live in Douentza and its surroundings . In the city of Douentza in particular, many residents are descended from earlier Riimaybe slaves.

On April 5, 2012, Douentza was captured by the Tuareg rebels of the National Movement for the Liberation of the Azawad (MNLA). The MNLA ended the offensive and declared the city to be the "border" of the new Azawad state . The following day, Azawad was officially declared independent from Mali. On September 1, 2012, the Islamist group Movement for Unity and Jihad in West Africa took over the city.

In January 2013, Douentza was retaken by the Malian army and soldiers from France as part of the Serval Operation.
