Douglas Fletcher

Douglas Valmore Fletcher (born 1917 in Kingston ; † February 18, 2000 ) was a Jamaican lawyer, diplomat and politician with the People's National Party (PNP).

Life

Fletcher attended Jamaica College before being admitted to the bar on August 24, 1938. He was a founding partner of the law firm Myers, Fletcher, Gordon in 1943. In 1958 he became chairman of the Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation . From 1959 to 1962 Fletcher was a minister with no portfolio in the government of Prime Minister Norman Manley and chairman ( president ) of the PNP. After the country gained independence, he was a member of the Senate from 1962 to 1967. From 1972 to 1975 he was Jamaica's Ambassador to Washington, DC ( USA ) and to the Organization of American States . On his return to Jamaica, Fletcher served as Chairman of the Workers Savings and Loan Bank from 1975 to 1977 , then of the National Commercial Bank until 1980 .

Fletcher was married and had five children.
