Douglass Junior and Senior High School is a historic school building in Huntington , Cabell County , West Virginia . The building was built in 1924 for the Douglass High School as a high school for African Americans in the era of racial segregation built (segregation).
architecture
The building is located at Tenth Avenue and Bruce Street . It is three-story and 113 ft (34.4 m) wide and 230 ft (70.1 m) long. It is walled up with red bricks with a terracotta- colored cut and stands on a concrete foundation.
history
The original school closed in 1961, and a special education school continued until 1981. After that, offices of the education authority were housed there.
Today there is a community center in the building.
In 1985 the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places .
Personalities
- Hal Greer (1936–2018), first African American athlete at Marshall University , longtime playmaker with the Philadelphia 76ers
- Carter G. Woodson (1875–1950), educator, graduated from the school in 1895 and later became a principal
