Douiret ( Arabic دويرات, DMG Duwairāt ) is an imposing Berber village ( ksar ) with around 500 inhabitants in the Tataouine governorate in southern Tunisia . It consists of a completely abandoned old and a new town center.

geography

location

Douiret is located in the almost desert-like Dahar Mountains at an altitude of approx. 445 m above sea level. d. M. and about 21 km (driving distance) southwest of Tataouine .

climate

The summer day temperatures can easily reach 40 ° C and more; at night it cools down to around 5 ° C, depending on the cloudiness. In winter the daytime temperatures are between 10 and 20 ° C; Night frosts are rare. Rain actually only falls in the winter months; the long-term average rainfall is around 140 millimeters per year.

economy

The inhabitants of earlier centuries lived as farmers and ranchers in a semi-nomadic way of life ( transhumance ), which continued into the first half of the 20th century. The terraced fields were watered in spring and harvested at the end of April; in summer the cattle were moved to higher regions of the Dahar mountainous region. Since the 1940s, this way of life has been gradually abandoned - also because of the increasingly less rainy climate. Many men work in the cities of the north or on Djerba ; some have brought their families to join them. Due to its imposing location, the place became a popular tourist destination at the end of the 20th century.

history

As in almost all Berber settlements in the Maghreb, there are no records of the history of the place. Around the year 1850, the place is said to have had around 3,500 inhabitants. Photos from around 1900 attest to the extremely simple way of life of the semi-nomadic residents.

Attractions

  • Rock overhangs and grottos, some of which are still preserved, often served as dwellings for the people.
  • The largely dilapidated old communal storage facility ( ksar ) in the old town center was restored and plastered at the beginning of the 21st century.

Surroundings

The mountain village of Chenini is located about 20 km (driving distance) to the northwest .
