Chenini ( Arabic شنني, DMG Šaninī ) is a Berber village in the Tataouine Governorate in southern Tunisia . The village is divided into a newer settlement in the valley, in which most of the inhabitants (around 1000) live, and the mostly deserted, historic center on a hill.

location

Chenini is located in the Dahar Mountains at an altitude of about 450 m above sea level. d. M. around 20 km (driving distance) west of Tataouine .

economy

The inhabitants of earlier centuries lived as farmers and ranchers in a semi-nomadic way of life ( transhumance ), which continued into the first half of the 20th century. As a consequence of the steadily decreasing rainfall since the 1960s, many residents work in Tataouine or on the island of Djerba or have left the place entirely. Due to its location, Chenini has become a popular tourist destination (mainly for day-trippers from Djerba).

history

As in almost all Berber settlements in the Maghreb, there are no records of the history of the place. South of the village, the Romans built a barrage at a narrow point with the Chenini-Clausura to secure the upper reaches of the Wadi Chenini. The Clausura belonged to the deep system of forts and military posts of the Limes Tripolitanus in the Roman province of Africa proconsularis .

Surroundings

The mountain village of Douiret is about 20 km (driving distance) to the south-east ; 10 and 20 km to the north are the mountain villages of Guermessa and Ghomrassen , from where it is not far to Ksar Haddada .

Trivia

Several scenes from Star Wars were filmed in the wider area of Chenini . Many names of the surrounding cities and areas are used in the film series; Chenini is one of the moons of Luke Skywalker's home planet.
