Ghomrassen ( Arabic غمراسن) is a city with around 10,000 and a delegation with a total of around 15,000 inhabitants in the Tataouine Governorate in southern Tunisia .

location

Ghomrassen is located on the eastern edge of a valley basin in the middle of the layered landscape of the Dahar Mountains at an altitude of around 350 m above sea level. d. M. in a semi-desert environment. The Wadi Fessi, one of the more important dry valleys of southern Tunisia, which comes out of the basin, forms a gorge in Qomrassen and breaks through the Jura level of the Dahar. Then it runs over a wide plain to the east.

The cities of Tataouine and Medenine are located about 26 km (driving distance) southeast and about 41 km northeast. The mountain villages of Chenini and Douiret, which are worth seeing, are approx. 35 km and 45 km south-west, respectively.

economy

Agriculture has been practiced in the former oasis settlement for thousands of years, with cattle breeding (sheep, goats, donkeys) initially only gradually being abandoned ( transhumance ) due to the sedentary lifestyle , and then largely abandoned in the last 100 years. Instead, craftsmen, traders and other tradespeople have settled here over the years. Many men work in the cities of the north or in Europe; on the other hand, many immigrants from the increasingly arid mountain regions have settled here.

history

As in almost all Berber settlements in the Maghreb , not much is known about the earlier history of the place. In Roman times it was one of the border fortifications of the Limes Tripolitanus .

Attractions

  • The stone and clay houses of the old town are located on a rocky slope about 30 m above today's town .
  • In a grotto - later also used as apartments - in the rock walls surrounding the place, there are reddish Neolithic rock paintings with depictions of animals.
  • In the village itself there are some ground-level storage chambers ( ghorfas ), as they can be found in a much more impressive form in the vicinity of Medenine or in Ksar Haddada or in Ksar Ouled Soltane, which is about 50 km south-east .
