The Ksar Ouled Soltane ( Arabic قصر أولاد سلطان, DMG Qaṣr Aulād Sulṭān ) is a village with about 1,000 inhabitants in the Tataouine North Delegation in the Tataouine Governorate in southern Tunisia . One of the most impressive storage castles ( ksour ) in the country is on the outskirts .
location
The small place is at an altitude of about 410 m above sea level. d. M. in semi-desert terrain about 23 km (driving distance) southeast of Tataouine .
economy
The place or rather the Ksar was formerly an important station of the caravan trade on the northern edge of the Sahara . Today tourism plays the most important role in the economic life of the place.
history
As in the Berber- inhabited regions of the entire Maghreb , there is no written evidence of the history of the place . The traditional, hard and hard life of the inhabitants lasted well into the first half of the 20th century. After that, many families migrated to the cities.
Ksar
The most important attraction of the place is the Ksar, which is made of rammed earth and consists of two fortified courtyards with vaulted storage chambers ( ghorfas ) arranged on top of each other . The stepping stones in front of the entrance doors of the approximately 400 chambers could be reached via relocatable palm trunks with notched steps, ladders or bricked stairs. The chambers served as storage rooms for supplies (grain, oil, dried beans, lentils, dates, etc.) and other kinds of belongings (household and work equipment, weapons) for the semi-nomadic ( transhumance ) families of the place. Also came caravans on the running mostly in south-north direction trade routes over here and took advantage of the Ksar as a safe resting and storage space.
Others
The ksar served as the backdrop for Tatooine in several takes of the first Star Wars film .
