Michael Mackensen

Michael Mackensen (born November 1, 1949 in Munich ) is a German provincial Roman archaeologist .

Life

Mackensen studied from 1969/1970 to 1976/1977 Provincial Roman Archeology, Prehistory and Early History and Ancient History in Munich , Freiburg and Oxford . In the summer semester of 1974 he did a master's thesis in prehistory and in the winter semester of 1976/1977 he did his doctorate under Günter Ulbert on the subject of The Roman burial ground on the Keckwiese in Kempten. In 1977/1978 Mackensen received a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute . Until 1980 he worked for the DAI as a research assistant (excavation Carthage / Tunisia and Resafa/Syria). For the Resafa project he received a research grant from the DAI in 1979/1980.

This was followed in 1981 by a brief position at the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation in Munich. In the same year Mackensen worked again in Carthage as a research assistant at the DAI. 1981/1982 he worked as a research assistant in the Prehistoric State Collection . Then Mackensen was a research assistant to the commission for the archaeological research of the late Roman Raetia of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences until 1994 (excavation projects Nersingen , Burlafingen, Finningen and Kellmünz as well as a survey project in northeastern Tunisia).

From the summer semester of 1988, Mackensen held lectures at the LMU Munich, and in 1989 he was appointed C3 professor at the University of Cologne . In the winter semester 1991/1992 Mackensen did his habilitation again in Munich with the topic The late antique sigillata and lamp pottery of El Mahrine (Northern Tunisia). Studies of North African fine ceramics from the 4th to 7th centuries. From the summer semester of 1994 Mackensen was C3 professor at the LMU Munich as the successor to Günter Ulbert . He retired at the end of March 2015, and was succeeded by Salvatore Ortisi in autumn 2016 .

Honors

Mackensen has been a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute since 1985 and has been a corresponding member of the Austrian Archaeological Institute (ÖAI) since 1998. In 2010 he was made a full member of the OeAI. In 1989 he received the Kurt Bittel Prize for South German Classical Studies . In 2008 he became a member of the Advisory Committee of the Journal of Roman Archeology, in 2009 a member of the Advisory Board of the Roman Communications. Mackensen has been a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London since 2009 . In 2010 he received the Prize for Good Teaching from the Free State of Bavaria and in 2013 the Teaching Innovation Prize from the Ludwig Maximilians University.
