The Dr.-Ernst-Mucke-Straße , Upper Sorbian dr. Arnošta Mukowa dróha , is an approximately 240 meter long inner-city street in the Bautzen districts of the city center and Nordostring . It connects Postplatz with August-Bebel-Platz and is named after the folklorist, writer and founder of the Sorbian Museum , Dr. Arnošt Muka (Ernst Mucke) named.

course

The street leaves Postplatz on the south-eastern edge of downtown Bautzen as a one-way street in an easterly direction, crosses the ramparts and meets Wallstrasse. Behind Wallstrasse, it continues in a south-easterly direction to August-Bebel-Platz. In this section it is also a one-way street, but in the opposite direction, so that full driving through is not allowed.

history

In the course of the construction of the Bautzen train station , the development of the south-eastern inner city was redesigned in the middle of the 19th century. The outer city wall was broken through in several places and subsequently largely leveled. The somewhat secluded train station was connected to the old town via Bahnhofstrasse . In the course of this, the Postplatz was given a new meaning as an inner-city square on the site of the old Goschwitz village square. The newly laid road to the east was intended to connect it with the new residential areas around Albertplatz (August-Bebel-Platz) that were created there from 1870 .

Until after the Second World War , the western part of the street between Postplatz and Wallstrasse was called Gartenstrasse , while the eastern part was known as Bergstrasse . On the occasion of the 100th birthday of Arnošt Muka (1854-1932) and the construction of the new Serbski dom at the west end of the street, the name was changed.

Development

While the western end is characterized by coherent inner-city development, the rental villas in Bautzen's "villa district" are characteristic of the eastern half. There are a total of five cultural monuments along the road , including the two residential buildings No. 2 and 4 in the western part and residential building No. 11 / 11b and villas No. 8 and 12 in the eastern part. The latter were built after 1885.
