"Dr. Atl " , real name Gerardo Murillo (born October 3, 1875 in Guadalajara , † August 15, 1964 in Mexico City ), was a Mexican representative of muralism .

biography

Murillo began painting at a young age and attended the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes in Mexico City from 1890 to 1896 . With a grant from the Mexican President Porfirio Díaz , he was able to continue his studies in Europe from 1899. Here he studied philosophy and law at La Sapienza University in Rome and went on a few study trips to hear Henri Bergson in Paris . He collaborated in Italy with the Partito Socialista Italiano and worked at Avanti! With. During this time, Leopoldo Lugones “Dr. Atl ", where Atl stands for water in Nahuatl . After returning to his home country, he organized exhibitions for local artists, including Diego Rivera . He had an intense relationship with Carmen Mondragón , whom he also gave the name "Nahui Ollin", under which she was very well known as a model.

Again Murillo went to Paris, where he founded a newspaper and wrote about social and political Mexican affairs, criticizing in particular the President Victoriano Huerta . In addition, he painted a lot of landscapes due to his closeness to nature . He was particularly fascinated by volcanoes; in particular , he studied the Popocatépetl and the Iztaccíhuatl carefully. In 1950 he documented his studies from 1943 on the Paricutín in a book with the same title. Unfortunately, he lost a leg in an accident while doing volcanic studies.

Murillo has received several awards for his publications and pictures, including the Medalla Belisario Domínguez del Senado de la República in 1956 and the Mexican National Art Prize in 1958.
