Life
Not much is known about the life of Trülku Dragpa Gyeltshen. He came from the Gekhasa family and was seen alongside Künga Nyingpo as one of the possible contenders for the reincarnation of the 4th Dalai Lama . After Künga Nyingpo was enthroned as the 5th Dalai Lama in 1622 and was given the name "Ngawang Lobsang Gyatsho", Dragpa Gyeltshen became the 4th Trülku of the Zimkhang Gongma in 1625. He received the name "Dragpa Gyeltshen" from Penchen Lama Lobsang Chökyi Gyeltshen , who also became his tutor.
Trülku Dragpa Gyeltshen was a very docile student and became very well known in Tibet alongside the 5th Dalai Lama. When great prayer festival Monlam of 1633 his throne to have stood next to the throne of the Dalai Lama. He also attracted pilgrims from all over Tibet who wanted to have an audience with him.
Trülku Dragpa Gyeltshen's death
Various sources tell more about his death than about Trülku Dragpa Gyeltshen's life. The sources agree that his body in 1656 with a Khata was found in the neck in his quarters in the Zimkhang Gongma. The sources disagree on how it came about. The following statements are made:
- Trülku Dragpa Gyeltshen had prominent critics and opponents in the Tibetan government, including the then Desi Sönam Chöphel (Tib .: sde srid bsod nams chos' phel ; 1595–1658). The conflict had gone so far that a reason was sought to kill Trülku Dragpa Gyeltshen. Trülku Dragpa Gyeltshen knew about it and, since there was no evidence of violence, he voluntarily swallowed the khata and choked on it. Thus he committed suicide before he could be killed.
- Trülku Dragpa Gyeltshen had been forced by one or more people to swallow the khata. So he would have been murdered.
- Supporters of the 5th Dalai Lama had Trülku Dragpa Gyeltshen swallowed the khata after he had defeated the 5th Dalai Lama in a debate and thus demonstrated his superiority. After the debate, he received a khata from the 5th Dalai Lama, and it was this khata that was later found in his throat and on which he suffocated.
After Trülku Dragpa Gyeltshen's death, a stupa was built for him at the Zimkhang Gongma . This stupa and the Zimkhang Gongma were destroyed when rumors arose that Trülku Dragpa Gyeltshen had turned into an angry and vengeful spirit . To avoid the negative consequences, the remains of Trülku Dragpa Gyeltshen were thrown into a river and no reincarnation was sought. Trülku Dragpa Gyeltshen was the last of the Zimkhang Gongma Trülkus. In the Gelug tradition, the wrathful and vengeful spirit was associated with or equated with Dölgyel / Dorje Shugden in the future .
