Drakensang Online is a browser-based , free online role-playing game from the German company Bigpoint . The game principle of the fantasy role-playing game is based on the Diablo series. and was developed by Bigpoint Berlin. It is one of the few MMORPGs developed in Germany . From August 2011 to July 2012, the title was in open beta. According to the company's own information, there are currently around 17 million registered accounts, the actual number of players may differ as multiple registrations are allowed. A retail version was released in November 2011.
Gameplay
Playfully leaning Drakensang Online to the Diablo in series and similar titles. It is visually and in detail very similar to the Sacred series (including the use of mounts). Control is from the iso perspective . At the start of the game, the player must create a character and can choose from different character classes (magician, archer, warrior or dwarf). It is possible to play up to four characters with one account on the same server.
The game world can be explored freely. Quests can be accepted, dungeons explored or just monsters defeated. The player can act alone or together with other players. There is a guild system in which player communities can organize. Communication takes place via an internal chat system. The Duria game world is based on medieval Europe. It is regularly expanded through online updates, and new functions or character classes are added.
To advance quickly in the game, it is helpful to have sufficient game currency Andermant. This can be found in small quantities by completing missions and killing enemies. Alternatively - analogous to other free online and browser games - it can be purchased from Bigpoint in an item shop for a fee. However, this currency is not necessarily required.
development
The roots of the project can be found at the German development studio Radon Labs , which published the title Das Schwarze Auge: Drakensang in 2008 and the successor Drakensang: Am Fluss der Zeit in 2010 . These were classic role-playing games for single players in the game world of Das Schwarze Auge ( DSA ). In May 2010 Radon Labs had to file for bankruptcy and was integrated into the existing studio Bigpoint Berlin after the takeover by the browser game manufacturer Bigpoint . In September 2010 the development of Drakensang Online was announced. Since Bigpoint did not acquire a DSA license and only owns the naming rights of Drakensang , a completely new game world with its own set of rules was developed for Drakensang Online . The game is therefore not related to its predecessors in terms of content or play.
Like all Radon Labs titles, the game is based on the self-developed Nebula engine , which has been adapted for use in the browser. The game was written in C ++ and initially ran exclusively using a Java applet in the browser. A newer client for various Windows and Mac operating systems now also enables games to be played on systems without Java installation. Playing on Linux is not possible natively and requires the use of emulators.
In August 2011, Drakensang Online was released to the public as an open beta phase. That also included the item shop for the acquisition of Andermant, which is why the game has already started business. On August 13, 2013 Bigpoint announces an add-on for Drakensang Online with the following content : Increase of the level cap from level 40 to 45, 30 new NPCs, more than 100 new quests, twelve new monsters and a new boss who can become heroes opposed by Duria. On January 23, 2014, Bigpoint released a new update that prevents kills from being stolen. On February 5, 2014, female steam mechanics were included in the game with an update. On August 26, 2015, Bigpoint released an add-on for Drakensang Online with the following content : Increase of the level cap from level 45 to 50, around 150 new quests, 11 new opponents and 200 new items. Bigpoint has also built in a new talent system.
Sales versions
Although it is a browser game that can be played directly in the browser without lengthy downloads, two retail versions of the game were released in stores, which included a certain number of otherwise available game items in addition to the free client software. The cheaper box contained armor and 10,000 units of the game currency Andermant for the purchase of game items in the in-game shop. The box, which was about twice as expensive, contained the armor and 12,000 Andermant as well as access to a dragon figure that the player could use as a pet and to collect experience points.
reception
In August 2011, GameStar magazine rated the high graphics quality in comparison to other browser games as positive . It was criticized, however, that the acquisition of the Andermant game currency quickly resulted in high costs, while the game tends to cause frustration without investing money and generally offers too little content. The frequently recurring requests for payment were described as very intrusive. Overall, Drakensang Online was referred to as the “framework of an action role-playing game” and its use was not recommended for the time being. Instead, competing products like Mythos and Hellbreed were recommended.
After a month, over 850,000 accounts had been created on the main page of the game. Drakensang Online was named the best German role-playing game at the 2011 German Developer Award. In May 2012 Drakensang received the award for “Best Browser Game” at the German Computer Game Award and was recognized as “Outstanding German Game Production”.
