Rotary tables are used both in machining in machine tools and in non- machining automation . Depending on the design, rotary tables are also called rotary tables, rotary indexing tables, indexing tables or dividing units .

The rotary tables differ, depending on the application, in terms of their design as well as their accuracy and rigidity . In machining, the requirements for accuracy and rigidity are higher than in the non-machining area. The shortest switching times are required in automation.

use

Machining

A rotary table is part of a machine tool on which workpieces are clamped for machining.

The turntable has a vertical or often also a horizontal axis of rotation around which the turntable or indexing table with the clamped workpiece can be rotated in order to carry out machining in different positions or on the rotating workpiece.

There are machine tools with continuously rotating turntables, such as vertical lathes , gear shaping machines and hobbing machines .

In other machines, an NC rotary table is controlled and freely programmable, such as slot shaping machines , milling machines , grinding machines or in machining centers . Depending on the application, servomotors with backlash-adjustable gears or direct drives with torque motors are used as drives .

Rotary indexing tables with a fixed pitch (e.g. 8 × 45 °) are used in rotary indexing machines . The rotary indexing table in the rotary transfer machine transports the workpieces from processing station to processing station. However, rotary indexing tables are not suitable for absorbing the direct forces of a milling machine. That is why they are often only used as a feed station.

Manual dividers can also be retrofitted on a machine.

automation

In assembly machines , welding systems, screen printing and pad printing systems , rotary indexing tables with cam drives often form the heart of a system. The rotary indexing table transports the workpieces from station to station on an additional indexing table.

Other uses

In addition to the applications in machines for processing and production, turntables are also used for the transport or the all-round presentation of objects. For example, the 18-tonne and 9 m high statue of Imperia in the harbor of Constance rotates on a round table.

In shop windows and display cases, goods are presented on all sides on turntables, especially heavy and bulky computer monitors and TV sets can be aligned for different viewing directions. See also revolving stage , Teufelsrad (ride) , Roulette, turntable for food presentation.

A turntable several meters in size was developed by Franz Wurz and used from around 1990 in the Teesdorf Driving Safety Center to make vehicles skid in a targeted manner. In the meantime, instead of the rotating plates, rectangular sling plates are used, which are moved sideways when driven over in order to move the rear of the vehicle to break away.
