The three-banded ornamental tetra ( Nannostomus trifasciatus ) belongs to the family of the slim tetra (Lebiasinidae) and occurs in northern South America in the Amazon river basin and in Guiana .
features
With a maximum length of 6 centimeters, the three-banded ornamental tetra is one of the larger Nannostomus species. It swims horizontally, has the typical, spindle-shaped body of the Nannostomus species and is very slim. The body length is five times the body height. The top of the head and back are olive-colored, the belly is white. From the tip of the snout to the lower part of the tail stalk runs a black longitudinal band, another one from the upper edge of the eyes lies above it. The lower longitudinal ligament extends in the abdominal region to the anal fin. The fish are colored golden between the upper and middle longitudinal ligament. There are red spots on the dorsal fin, anal fin, pelvic fins, and caudal peduncle. An adipose fin may be present, it is then behind the anal fin. Females are slightly paler in color. During the night the fish take on a green-gray to yellowish-gray night color and then show three broad, dark horizontal stripes.
