The Trinity Cathedral ( Romanian Catedrala Sfânta Treime ) surnamed Cathedral of the reunification of the nation ( Catedrala Reîntregirii Neamului so since 1948) or Coronation Cathedral ( Catedrala Încoronării until 1948) in the Romanian county seat Alba Iulia ( Karlsburg ) is the Episcopal Church of the Romanian Orthodox Archeparchy of Alba Iulia .

The neo-Byzantine central building with main and side domes , a 58 meter high bell tower and a surrounding rectangle of residential, meeting and administrative buildings was built in 1921–1923 according to plans by Victor Gheorghe Ștefănescu in the immediate vicinity of the Roman Catholic St. Michael's Cathedral erected after Transylvania became part of Romania as a result of the First World War . The annexation of Transylvania is also referred to in Romanian historiography as reunification, since under Mihai Viteazul the three countries Wallachia, Moldova and Transylvania in 1600 were united for a short time. On October 15, 1922, the cathedral was the scene of the coronation of King Ferdinand I and Queen Marie . In 1948, after the ban on the Romanian Greek Catholic Church by the communist regime and the arrest of numerous opposing priests and lay people, the union of the Uniate and the Romanian Orthodox Church took place here.
