history

View of the church tower

The construction of the first church began in 1862 by order of Paraćin Municipal Council. The steeple was built directly on the west wall of the church above the narthex . After two years of construction, the church was completed in 1864, but the steeple collapsed and destroyed the roof of the church, so that only the church walls remained.

It was not until 1893 that the reconstruction of the church and the steeple began. The Italian architect Palerni was commissioned to rebuild the church. In the middle of the reconstruction, Palerni left the construction site. In 1897 the construction of the church was continued under the engineer Miroslav Pavlović from Požarevac, who was based on a plan by the Belgrade architect Jovan Ilkić . The construction of the church was finished in 1898.

On June 6, 1899, the Serbian metropolitan Inokentije (Pavlović) from Belgrade inaugurated the church. At that time, Aleksandar Obrenović was King of Serbia . The church was consecrated to the Holy Trinity, the patron saint festival ( Slava ) of the town of Paraćin and the church. During the First World War the church was bombed and suffered severe damage. The church was also affected in the Second World War , when all the windows of the Trinity Church were broken when an arms store exploded. The exterior had to be redone several times, most recently in 1985.

The interior has remained unchanged apart from a few minor changes. In the east of the churchyard there is a common burial place of ten graves for the caterers and builders of the church. A monument was erected near the church in 1922 , dedicated to the liberators of Paraćin , who died in 1918.

architecture

The Trinity Church shows elements of different architectural styles . The church was built in the Serbian-Byzantine style of the Morava school . The large dome over the nave is typical of this architectural style . The church tower, on the other hand, shows the neo-Romanesque style , while the interior of the church is in the neo-baroque style.

Furnishing

The wooden iconostasis is the work of the Belgrade carpenter Vlajković. The icons attached there come from Russia .
