Trinity Church in Schwechat

The branch church of St. Dreifaltigkeit in Kleinschwachat (also Kapuzinerkirche or Liebfrauenkirche ) is a Roman Catholic church on Wiener Straße in the Kleinschwachat district in the municipality of Schwechat . It is part of the Schwechat deanery of the Archdiocese of Vienna .

history

A Capuchin monastery was founded in 1693 on the site of a former inn Zum Weißen Löwen and a trading house that was destroyed during the Second Turkish Siege of Vienna in 1683 . In 1697 Emperor Leopold I laid the foundation stone for the monastery church of St. Trinity . During the French Wars in 1809 the monastery library and the valuable archive were looted, and the church was desecrated and damaged. After the French withdrew, the destroyed church was confiscated for the religious fund and was supposed to be torn down, but this failed due to popular resistance.

In 1811 the Capuchin monastery was closed. The Dreifaltigkeitskirche was restored, but on the other hand the also destroyed church of Maria am Anger, which was also destroyed in 1815, except for a side chapel (today the chapel at the Schwechater parish cemetery on Alanovaplatz) was removed and pieces of equipment were used for the new Dreifaltigkeitskirche. Since that time, the name Liebfrauenkirche for the house of God has also become naturalized, as the name was also transferred with the parts of the old church. The income was also transferred from Maria am Anger to the Trinity Church, which was taken over by the Archdiocese of Vienna. In 1843 the church tower was built, which was raised in 1885. A dome, also erected in 1843, was removed 40 years later. A well built at the time near the church is said to have an underground passage that extends to the Jesuit mill.

During the Second World War, the church remained largely undamaged, although the area around it was severely damaged. In 1966 the church received a new main altar. The tower was renovated in 2000, but it has remained too weak to ring the bells since then.

Building description

The single-nave aisle church faces north. The presbytery is noticeably long, probably because it was used by the Capuchins as a prayer choir.

The high altar dates from the time of Josephinism between 1780 and 1800. It is a retable altar that occupies the entire wall and has four columns and a painted representation of St. Trinity, above a plastic angel figure. Two painted pictures to the side of it depict the apostle James the Elder and John the Baptist . In front of the altar there is a figure of Mary from the Church of Maria am Anger . The current main altar from 1966 is located in the middle of the presbytery. The left side altar shows a picture of St. Johannes Nepomuk , above in a medallion of St. Rochus . The right side altar represents St. Francis of Assisi , above in medallion St. Sebastian . A picture with the instruction of Mary by her mother Anna comes from the castle chapel Kettenhof .

The organ is from 1872. In its place there was previously the organ from the church Maria am Anger , which was passed on to the parish church in Zwentendorf and existed there until 1901.

The Dreifaltigkeitskirche has been a branch church of the Schwechat parish since 1815 .
