Dreifertstrasse 8

The corner building at Dreifertstrasse 8 / Friedrich-Ebert-Strasse 30 is a protected architectural monument and was designed and built in 1903/04 by the firm of the architect Georg Schneider on behalf of the Auguste Foundation .

description

The building, which stands on an acute-angled plot of land, has a trapezoidal floor plan. The building also has symmetrical masonry with a high basement and a Berlin roof . The facade is characterized by bay windows , balconies, floor and sill cornices. These give the house a picturesque, relaxed structure. In the style of the " Weser Renaissance ", various windows and various splendid architectural decorations were used. The ornamentation consists of 500 prefabricated individual components, which are made of artificial stone and applied to the masonry. Furthermore, the appearance is characterized by cast zinc elements, forging and various structured and different colored plaster mortars. The architect plays with other design elements such as material imitations. These imitate z. B. a hewn stone from porphyry tuff using red plaster or colored stone using red cast stone. The ground floor was provided with red colored plaster blocks and the arches of the windows are accompanied by ribbons with rosettes. On the long side there are cross-storey “dummy bay windows”, the concave curved zinc roof of which has been provided with figurative gargoyles. Stucco elements can be found below the bay windows and the other windows on the side facade are lavishly framed. The gable with dating inscriptions cover the "dummy bay window" as well as the two outer axes. The entrance front is very prominent in terms of design. Here you can find hexagonal corner bay windows under the Welschen zinc hoods with lanterns and weather vane. The stylistic elements of the side facade and gable are taken up again on the bay windows. The house entrance is arranged in the middle and has an imposing canopy-like balcony with a massive parapet. This parapet has oval medallions surrounded by volutes between spherical posts. The balcony on the second floor has a wrought iron parapet. The high portal has a special effect due to the shoulder arch on the door. The ornamental crowning into the skylight window and the rosette decorations on the portal walls contribute to this. The four-storey courtyard side is lime-sandstone and has red brick bands. There are balconies on the long sides. Noteworthy is the windscreen of the input area, which makes reference to the façade. Furthermore, the base ashlar and the ribs of the ceiling vault, which is divided into three bays, with their red plaster, show an imitation of porphyry . Above the entrance door there is a label with a rose decoration. Here it is written: “Without God's favor, all tree around”. The staircase at the entrance is on a circular floor plan. The iron railing was given a gold bronze paint and imitates a gold leaf.

restoration

A comprehensive restoration of the building began in 2000. The planner Peter Rudolph received the Cottbus Monument Prize for the renovation of the building in 2011.

meaning

The rental house is rare because there are no other examples in the region. It also embodies the high point of late historical architecture in Cottbus.
