Drexel Wellington Gomez (born January 24, 1937 ) is an Anglican Archbishop and Primate of the Ecclesiastical Province of the West Indies .

He attended Codrington College in Barbados from 1955-57 and the University of Durham from 1957-59 . He was ordained in 1959, a priest in 1960 and Bishop of Barbados in 1972 . In 1996 he became Bishop of the Diocese of the Bahamas & the Turks and Caicos Islands . In 1998 he was elected Archbishop and Primate of the Ecclesiastical Province of the West Indies. His full title is "His Grace, The Most Reverend Drexel Wellington Gomez, Lord Archbishop, Metropolitan and Primate of the Church of the West Indies & Bishop of the Diocese of Nassau & the Bahamas (including the Turks & Caicos Islands)".

Along with Archbishop Peter Akinola , Primate of the Church of Nigeria , Archbishop Gomez is a leading opponent of the ordination of non-celibate lesbian and gay men , an issue that sparked a crisis in the Anglican community following the episcopal ordination of Gene Robinson as Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of New Hampshire 2003 led. Unlike Akinola, however, he advocates the decriminalization of homosexuality as he regards this as a question of human rights, even if he adheres to a negative moral assessment of same-sex intercourse.

In October 2003, the Archbishop of Canterbury , Rowan Williams , appointed Gomez as a member of the Lambeth Commission on Communion . This commission produced a report, widely known as the Windsor Report , which was published in October 2004.
