The Third Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge is a bridge over the Mekong . It connects the province of Nakhon Phanom in Thailand with the province of Khammouane in Laos .
General
The agreement to build the bridge was signed at the end of December 2007 after the Thai cabinet had approved the plans at the beginning of the same month. The laying of the foundation stone by the Lao Vice President Boungnang Vorachith and Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand took place in March 2009, and construction work began two months later. The bridge was officially opened on November 11, 2011. The work was carried out by the Italian-Thai Development Limited Company , with Thailand bearing the costs.
The bridge connects the village of Hom in Tambon At Samat , about 10 km north of the Thai city of Nakhon Phanom , with the village of Veuntay , about 11 km north of the Laotian city of Thakhek . The 13 m wide concrete bridge has two lanes and two footpaths. It corresponds to the first Thai-Lao friendship bridge between Vientiane and Nong Khai , but in contrast to this and contrary to initial plans, it has no rail connection. It is the third friendship bridge between the two countries.
