Drosophila lanaiensis is a species of fly from the genus Drosophila within the fruit fly family. It occurs on the Hawaiian islands of Lānaʻi and Maui . It was long considered extinct but was rediscovered in 2010.
features
The body length is 3.5 to 5 mm, the wing length 4 to 5.5 mm. The forehead is reddish yellow, the eyes and the vertical triangle between them are lighter. The face has a yellow shimmer and is not keeled. The proboscis and palpi are brown and lighter at the base. The antennae are dark yellow, with the upper edge of the first two links and the entire third link being darker, sometimes dark brown. The thorax is yellowish with three brownish stripes. The middle stripe is sometimes indistinct, and between this and the side stripes there is a blurry, very narrow dark line on either side. The pleurae are yellowish with a dark spot on the mesopleura . The scutellum , the rear breast and the holders are yellow. The abdomen resembles that of the species Drosophila conspicua , but the yellowish spots are not as pronounced and the ovipositor is longer and slimmer. The terminal link of the tarsi is dark.
status
For a long time, Drosophila lanaiensis was only known from five females collected in December 1893 at an altitude of 610 meters. As a result, it was declared extinct by the IUCN in 1986. In 2010, however, a male attributed to this species was discovered on Lanai. The species Drosophila virgulata , discovered in Maui in 1966, has been synonymous with Drosophila lanaiensis .
