The cottage

Drummond Castle is a late 15th century tower house and a 17th century country house . Both parts of the building were rebuilt in Victorian times . Drummond Castle is located in the parish of Muthill , about 4 km south of Crieff , in the Scottish county of Perthshire (now the administrative division of Perth and Kinross ). The castle is best known for its gardens, which Historic Scotland describes as "the best example of formal terraced gardens in Scotland". The gardens date from the 1630s and were also restructured in the 19th century. They are considered a Category A Historic Site and are listed on the Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes in Scotland . Historic Scotland has listed the tower block and the country house each as a Category B historic building.

history

The lands of Drummond belonged to the Drummond clan from the 14th century and the original tower block was built by John Drummond, 1st Lord Drummond of Cargill from around 1490. In 1605, the 4th Lord Drummond was appointed Earl of Perth and had additions to the castle. John Drummond, 2nd Earl of Perth , had the first terraced garden laid out around the castle in the 1630s.

The castle was captured by Oliver Cromwell's army in 1653 during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms . James Drummond, 4th Earl of Perth , was Lord Chancellor of Scotland under King James VII. Construction of the country house began in 1689 before being imprisoned by William of Orange after King James was deposed . He later fled to the Jacobite court in exile in France . The Drummonds continue to support the Jacobite cause in the Jacobite Risings of 1715 and 1745. The family continued to control the estate until their possessions were forfeited in 1750 and taken over by the state. The estate was managed by the Commissioners for Forfeited Estates until 1784 when it was sold to Captain James Drummond . He had a number of improvements made to the property, a work that was continued by his daughter and husband, Peter Drummond-Burell, 22nd Baron Willoughby de Eresby , (1782-1865). These included a. the formal gardens and terraces in the 1830s. Queen Victoria visited the gardens in 1842.

Drummond Castle fell to Clementina Drummond-Willoughby, 24th Baroness Willoughby de Eresby , (1809-1888) and then to her son, Gilbert Beathcote-Drummond-Willoughby, 1st Earl of Ancaster , (1830-1910). The upper floors of the residential tower were rebuilt in 1842–1853 in a pseudo-medieval style and the tower was raised. The country house was renovated in 1878 according to plans by George Turnball Ewing . The 3rd Earl of Ancaster and his wife, Nancy Astor , had the gardens replanted in the 1950s. The castle is now the seat of the 28th Baroness Willoughby de Eresby .

description

The castle sits on a prominent rocky ridge called Gask Ridge , a geographical feature that stretches for miles through Perthshire, but is particularly steep and visible where the castle stands. The residential tower or donjon is no longer used for residential purposes. The later, but better preserved gatehouse (built 1629–1630) is attached to it. It extends from the residential tower to the edge of the chain of hills and was originally intended to be used to control access to the courtyard behind, from where you have a beautiful view over the formal gardens. These are located south of the castle on their rocky ridge.

In the movie

The buildings and gardens of Drummond Castle were used as the backdrop in the 1995 film Rob Roy .
