Jamal al-Fadl

Jamal al-Fadl (* 1963 , Ruffa City, Sudan ) is a former important supporter of Osama bin Laden and the terrorist organization Al-Qaida, which he leads . In 1996, al-Fadl came to the USA and became one of the most important witnesses in trials against al-Qaeda members.

Life

Al-Fadl was born in Sudan in 1963. In 1981 he moved to Jeddah , Saudi Arabia , where he lived until November 1986, when Al-Fadl came to the USA for the first time. The Muslim joined the Al-Farook Mosque in Brooklyn , New York . This mosque repeatedly recruited fighters for the Afghanistan war , including Al-Fadl in 1988. In Peshawar , Pakistan , he trained in weapons handling in a camp. He was involved in at least one combat operation in the Afghanistan war.

Al-Fadl first met with the later leaders of Al-Qaeda via the Maktab al-Chidamāt facility in Peshawar, which is considered to be a nucleus of Al-Qaeda. He raised funds and operated internationally in many Muslim countries in Asia and Africa and was thus involved in the rise of al-Qaeda. In the years that followed he served al-Qaida in many ways, for example, he was involved in the failed attempt to procure uranium for al-Qaida in Sudan .

1996 was revealed that he Al-Qaeda to a sum of around 100,000 US dollars was stolen. As a result, Osama bin Laden asked for the money to be returned immediately. Al-Fadl repaid part of the sum, but feared retaliation from Al-Qaeda. He decided to turn against the terrorist organization and offered information about it.

Finally he managed to get to the US embassy in Eritrea . There he reported his intentions. As a result, he was taken to Germany to a US military base and later to the US, where he was accepted into the witness protection program. In 1996 he was convicted of guilty proceedings, but no sentence was carried out due to his willingness to testify as a witness . Al-Fadl first lived in a hotel in New Jersey . A little later his wife and six children came to the USA. The family had to move several times in the following years. Al-Fadl was considered the most important US witness against Al-Qaeda and testified, among other things, in the trial against four Al-Qaeda members who were involved in bomb attacks on US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in August 1998.
